CCA Track & Field Coach’s Comments - Spring 2005

Our middle school track team had an incredible 2005 season. We had twenty-two boys and girls (grades 5-8) that made our team. Despite their size and quantity, they accomplished gigantic results: we took home two 2nd place trophies at the Epiphany Invitational Track Meet. Nine fifth grade girls won one trophy and only four sixth grade girls won the other. There were 9 schools represented; Cornerstone was the smallest school, but certainly not the weakest! It was a proud day; we were breaking records left and right.

Eleven athletes were able to attend sectionals and four of them qualified for the state track meet in East Peoria. Emily Clay competed in the 800 meter run and did respectfully well. She also made history that day by breaking the 7th grade girls state record in the pole vault competition and taking home a first place medal. She vaulted 7'11" that day, just shy of her best vault of 8'0" at her sectional meet. I was also very proud of our young 4 x 200 relay team that competed that day, winning their heat and breaking their personal record with a time of 2:05. The team was comprised of one fifth grader and three sixth graders: Caila Brander, Hillary Nussbaum, Olivia Elder, and Emily Clay. These girls are amazingly talented to be competing at a state track meet at their age. Considering our biggest obstacle of not having our own track to practice on, it’s incredible that we got to compete at all! Surely God was good to us!

We celebrated our track season at the Elderado Ranch with a cookout and awards ceremony. It was a pleasure to recognize these athletes. All had achieved so much on both personal and competitive levels. I was in awe of God's provision and blessings. Every athlete was recognized for their school records or personal best records. The following athletes were also recognized:

The DOVE award (determined, optimistic, vigorous work ethic, eager) went to Grant Hall, Anna Marie Harp, and Michaela Whittaker.

The TEAM PLAYER award (team player, encourages others, athletic, motivated) went to Cody Wilson and Caila Brander.

The Most Valuable Player award went to Gage Gwaltney and Emily Clay.
